Mercy Brown lived in Exeter, Rhode Island. Her mother Mary and sister Mary Olive died of consumption (Tuberculosis) in 1888. Her brother, Edwin became sick in 1890 with the disease. In 1981 Mercy contracted the disease and died in 1892.
It was believed by friends and neighbors that one of the dead family members was a vampire that was the cause of Edwins illness. At this time in history Consumption was misunderstood and folklore and fear fueled the belief that the undead were the cause of the illness. Mercys father, George, gave permission for several of his family members bodies to be exhumed.
Villagers and the local doctor exhumed the bodies in March 1892. Both the mother, Mary, and Mary Olive were decomposing, Mercy was in relatively good condition. She also still had blood in her heart. This was believed to mean Mercy was one of the "undead" and causing the illness in Edwin. Mercys heart was removed from her body, burned and the ashes mixed with water for Edwin to drink. This was suppose to be a cure for Edwins illness caused by the undead. Unfortunately for Edwin he died two months later.
& my own stock.
This looks nothing like the real grave. Because of the legend the real grave has been stolen and recovered to then be bolted down. Rather sad people will go to that extent. Her grave is said to be haunted with glowing green orbs seen at night.
